HOW TO BECOME
A LAND SURVEYOR

Professional Surveyor Path

To become a professional land surveyor, you must fulfill three requirements

Requirement 1:

Academic Evaluation

Each candidate submits their University and College transcripts to AOLS for review to ensure they meet our academic requirements. Candidates who meet the requirements can proceed to the Experience Evaluation if they are within three courses of meeting them. Otherwise, they must complete additional courses as required. The academic evaluation ensures that all surveyors have a strong educational foundation in relevant fields.

Colleges and universities that offer surveying courses are listed here.

Requirement 2:

Experience Evaluation

Candidates are required to complete one of the following:

  • Submit a Competency-based Assessment (CBA) form if they already have the experience to meet our core competency requirements. Those who do not meet our Core Competency must fill in any gaps and can do so by articling, completing assignments, obtaining experience elsewhere, or a combination thereof. The experience evaluation process ensures practical knowledge and skills.
  • Article to an Ontario Land Surveyor to gain the necessary experience to meet our Core Competency requirements.

Requirement 3:

Statutes and Professional Exams

All candidates must successfully complete a set of professional exams. These exams test the candidate’s knowledge of laws, ethics, and professional practices in land surveying, ensuring they are well-prepared to start their career as an Ontario Land Surveyor.

Other Canadian Surveyors

Candidates will be required to pass a jurisdictional exam that tests for knowledge of Ontario Statutes and legal principles that govern how boundaries are established and retraced in Ontario.

SEE WHAT YOU CAN APPLY FOR

The first step for all candidates for membership is to apply to the Association (to the Registrar) for a detailed evaluation of their post-secondary education and experience.
